Sweden has one of Europe's most successful startup ecosystems, producing global companies including Spotify, Klarna, King, and Mojang (Minecraft). Stockholm in particular has earned the nickname "the Unicorn Factory of Europe," with more unicorns per capita than any other city outside Silicon Valley.
Vinnova is Sweden's innovation agency, providing grants for research, development, and innovation projects. Vinnova's programs include Startup and Growth (for early-stage innovative companies), Innovative Startups (co-investment with private investors), and sector-specific programs in areas including health, sustainability, and digitalisation. Vinnova funding is non-dilutive and highly competitive.
Sweden's success in producing technology unicorns is often attributed to a combination of factors: a strong engineering education system, a culture of flat hierarchies and innovation, generous government support for R&D, and a small domestic market that forces Swedish startups to think globally from day one.
Almi is Sweden's government-owned business development company, providing loans and advisory services to Swedish startups and SMEs. Almi's loans are designed to complement commercial bank financing, providing capital to businesses that don't yet qualify for conventional bank products. Almi also provides equity investment through its venture capital arm, Almi Invest.
Sweden's VC market is one of Europe's most active per capita, with major funds including EQT Ventures, Northzone, Creandum, and Balderton Capital (with Swedish roots) actively investing in Swedish startups. Stockholm's startup ecosystem is concentrated in the Stureplan and Södermalm areas, with a strong community of founders, investors, and mentors.
